Book Description
The sequel to the highly successful and critically praised book, Bar and Club Design, New Bar and Club Design is an elegant photographic journey through the latest international design trends in the bar and club industries, highlighting bars and clubs completed since 2001.
There has been a resurgence of cocktail culture and an explosion of the "style bar," places that are professionally designed and serve high quality spirits, wine, and cocktails. Such bars have continued to open in cities such as New York, London, and Tokyo, but also in Beirut and Bangkok. Another strong trend in bar and club design, documented here, is a interest in creating lower budget designer bars that are as visually interesting and unusually designed as the big budget productions, such as Andy Wahloo in Paris and Loungelover in London. Likewise, club culture continues to thrive, albeit on a far smaller scale than the superclubs of the 1990s. Nightclubs have grown cozier, late night lounge bars have emerged to cater to the "grown-up clubber," offering comfort and luxury rather than an empty shell in which to dance. The futuristic "superclubs" still being built now offer the very latest in technology and audiovisual entertainment.
This book explores the design zeitgeist of drinking and dancing culture worldwide. Divided by category into bars, restaurant bars, hotel bars, and clubs, each profile includes imaginative photographs, thoughtful descriptions, and architectural plans of the design. The innovative, sleek photographs allow the reader to enter into the ambience of each bar and experience its atmosphere. Sure to be an excellent guide for bar and club owners, architects and designers, as well as a sourcebook for new design inspirations, New Bar and Club Design will be appealing to travelers, night-lifers and design-lovers of every description.

Unique Approach.......2007-08-11
This book is a classy edition to library of any nightclub industry professional and to anyone who enjoys fine design.
A sequel to "Bar and Club Design", a book I have not had the opportunity to view, this second book is reminiscent of the popular photograph books published with works of famous photographers. It is physically weighted, an unusual, square shape with high quality glossy pages. The book is divided by chapters that categorize the types of bars. Starting with bars, the book leads into restaurant bars, hotel bars, and clubs.
It visually captures fifty of the worlds most beautifully designed bars and clubs with detailed text descriptions that tell a story of their own. There are several floor plans that show the uniqueness of each of these clubs, beyond the photograph. Ryder, the books author, is a journalist from London specializing in lifestyle topics and interior design. This explains why each image in the book appears a true work of art.
Visit Coconclub in Moscow, Russia which is described as a "giant termite mound" by the author and as a "four level biomorphic formation like a mountain peppered with caves, suddenly put inside a building with a an eclectic façade" by its architects. The images that follow are an amazing feat of architecture and artwork weaved together.
See how Hajime in Tokyo, Japan has maximized the appearance of a small square footage area using some illumination and shadowing to create the illusion of a much larger space. Or the 2 million dollar color changing XL club in New York. The ideas, creativity and beauty seems endless.
This is a pleasant read and even more pleasant just to thumb through and enjoy the photographic art that it contains. If you own a bar or club, let it inspire you to make changes and differentiate your bar from others. If you just enjoy the nightlife, know that there are fascinating places you can spend your time.

Book Description
A toast to the world's most dazzling nightspots.
Once simply places to kick back and relax with a little drinking and dancing, bars and clubs have developed into stylish arenas at which to see and be seen. From slick "style bars" specializing in high-end spirits and wines to late-night lounge bars that provide a relaxing alternative to warehouse clubbing, cocktail culture is experiencing a tremendous revival. With every design element--from layout to lighting--considered vital to the success of any "scene," competitive designers continually push the limits of style, theme, and materials to create ever more spectacular spaces.
In Bar and Club Design, more than 40 visually intoxicating restaurant bars, hotel bars, independent bars, and clubs from all over the globe are featured in more than 200 stunning photographs and detailed floor plans. In each short chapter, author Bethan Ryder delves into enticing spots like Las Vegas' Rumjungle and Copenhagen's Nasa, covering each venue's remarkable history, layout, furniture, lighting, and accessories. She also provides insight into the individual designer's strategy for maximizing client pleasure, and in her engaging introduction sets recent bar and club development within its social and historical context.
Showcasing the best after-dark playgrounds, this invaluable reference for architects and designers is also an indispensable guide for anyone seeking the perfect party.
Other Details: 210 illustrations, 160 in full color. 10 1/4 x 10 1/4" trim size. Published 2002.
Customer Reviews:
Dated?.......2005-11-14
No offense meant to Bethan but as an Interior Architect looking for a reference, I wanted to air my views. I had to look at the published date because many of the clubs appear to be right out of the 1970's! I did appreciate the floor plans but didn't find the content to be inspirational for my design sensibilities.
Interior Design student review.......2005-02-16
This is the 1st time I've felt compelled to write a review at amazon. I am doing so because it really delivers the goods. I am a design student and ran across this book at the campus library. I checked it out and immediately read it cover to cover. It was an enlightening look at the variety of club and bar styles from all over the world. There were many understated and elegant bars and clubs included, not just the "super slick euro" designs one reviewer claimed. I have to assume they must have just skimmed the book and that was all they saw. There were plenty of trendy looking clubs in the book but that is the nature of the beast. I plan to now purchase this book and the new restaurant book by the same author to use as reference books when I am looking for inspiration.
...Opinions are just that........2005-02-09
Bethan Ryder,
I commend you for taking an active interest in the opinions of your readers/viewers. However, I encourage you to not take offense to any of your readers opinions especially those which are clearly novice. I have yet to purchase your book, which I intend to, however as an artistic visionary you above all should know that one mans beauty is another mans troll.
Author strikes back...........2004-06-21
Re: San Antonio reader.
As author of Bar & Club Design, with (evidently) currently too much spare time , I should like to point out a few things to the San Antonio reader who posted a review. Firstly, that I know none of the other readers who have posted reviews, they are not my bribed friends! And secondly, this book is actually a source book primarily aimed at architects and designers, many of whom find such books a useful tool for inspiration and ideas; it is not meant to be a step-by-step guide to how to design a bar or club.
Just wanted to get that straight for other readers of this page, so don't let Disparaging of ST dissuade you if that sounds up your street. And if you like this book, look out for 'Restaurant Design' due out this August (2004).
As the author I had no idea what to grade myself, so obviously put 5 stars...at least it'll grab your attention right?
an HONEST assessment.......2003-12-23
I bought this book based upon the posted reviews. I have often wondered if the regular buying public actually contributed these or if the author or their friends wrote em to increase sales. I now know. Bar and Club design is a lot of sizzle and no steak. The photographs are nice if you are in to super slick Euro looking clubs where you can visually hear the techno trash music in the background. The pictures are amusing only because you look at them once and think why? I guess that is why they were selected for this book. There are no ideas anyone spending their own money would care to emulate; unless you are spending Euro's or Yen. I did not get even one idea from this book and I am an open minded guy looking for ideas. May I suggest 'Successful Restaurant Design' and 'Restaurants That Work.' Even though they say restaurant in the title they show many more pictorial ideas, floorplans and insight for bars than this disappointment.

In The Biz.......2000-11-24
As a (small time) decorator of Night-clubs in England, this book has proved itself valuble when inspiration has been low. There is a good cross section of examples shown from across the world, with many well printed colour photos. The problem with decorating clubs (by that I mean paint effects and murals), is that whats "in" changes so frequently that this book will soon be out of date as a source of reference, alternatively if its a nice coffee table book with pictures of fantasy interiours thet you want, then well I've seen worse.

Book Description
Bar Style charts the glamorous design renaissance of hotel bars and members' clubs and the way their cutting-edge interiors have helped forge a new social culture. Until recently dominated by sexless corporate design and traditional stuffiness, hotel and members bars have responded to a backlash against homogeneity and are now the playground for innovative designers, sophisticated celebrities, and ultra-cool urbanites.
The revolution in 'exclusive' bars began with the birth of the Groucho and Ian Schrager's boutique hotels. There is now a stunning range of intimate, ground-breaking bars -- even within traditional hotels -- that offer the fashion-savvy, post-club generation somewhere to see and be seen. The designs of Starck, Collins, Jiricna, Conran and Chipperfield rise above the zeitgeist, providing interiors of great beauty, style, and wit.
Join author Howard Watson in an examination of bars from the UK, USA, Australia, Europe, and Asia and of the designs of Starck, Collins, Jiricna, Conran, and Chipperfield. Each bar study is accompanied by high quality images and a full description, summing up the design, ambience, and clientele.
Bar Style is a great source of information and inspiration for your own projects. Order your copy today.

Customer Reviews:
Misleading ....Title Implies an Overview.......2006-11-23
I am primarily interested in landscape painting, this artist is an accomplished portrait/figure pastellist but his florals and landscapes as evidenced in this book are so poor,,flowers are bright blobs and his landscapes are uninspired heavily into muddy ugly earth colors and of a quality that if i were offered one of his pics I would not give it wall space, The advice in general is pretty good but in no way is this small tome a source of true inspiration,,,unless you are a figure specialist and even then the details as to what hues/actual colors were used are very scanty (if given at all ) To me a near worthless instruction book,,pass on this one as it promises much more than it delivers,,
good introduction to oil pastels.......2006-09-16
The author is a pioneer and talented artist in oil pastel. He gives very valuable info about this medium--a long forgotten and underrated, even though promoted by Pablo Picasso...The book ,however, is 'sketchy' in details and techniques. The illustrations and art work are excellent, but somewhat repetitive...A good introductory book for enthusiasts of oil pastels and beginners, till a better book is written by someone else---after this medium becomes better used and established in the fine art world.Soft pastels have been with us for many decades, thanks to Degas and Mary Cassatt...Oil pastels are still to be pushed by great masters....Fortunately oil pastels are available at various price ranges for students and professionals...One learns more by trying different brands rather that sticking to just a few brands---Holbein or Sennelier...
With increasing concern for toxic dust particles from Soft pastels, oil pastels would be more widely used and this book would serve the newcomers well.
Good if you are already an artist.......2006-05-23
If you are a painter or illustrator who is looking to move from another medium into oil pastels, then this is the book for you. Mr. Elliot is a really talented artist and knows his subject. You will gain a lot from this book.
However, if you have little-to-no drawing/painting experience or you are an absolute beginner (like me), you will find yourself very, very frustrated by this book. I have found a few helpful things here, but overall, I think that I would need a year's study *before* I could effectively utilize Mr. Elliot's book.
fussy but fair.......2006-05-06
This book is a very good book expressly devoted to oil pastels-but that said, in comparison with the only other book on the subject that I know of, it is a distant second. (There are a couple other obscure ones which I haven't seen) My favorite is "Oil Pastel: Materials & Techniques For Today's Artist", by Kenneth Leslie, 1990, Watson-Guptill Pub. Because it is out of print & only available second hand at inflated prices, unless Amazon can bring it back in print, or you are prepared to pay inflated prices (for something you cannot see & evaluate for yourself in advance), we are left with the book by Elliot.
Elliot covers a moderate (compared with Leslie!) amount of basic info & gives you a look at the oil pastel works of other artists as well--something I consider very important, especially if the author's work doesn't grab you, & also because you get to see how other sensibilities handle the medium. And he gives a taste of the history of oil pastels; he talks about various papers, etc; he mentions only two brands: Sennelier & Holbein (both premier brands) but there are others he does not mention which are evaluated in Kenneth Leslie's book. Leslie gives you a ton of facts & ideas: shows you how to make your own oil pastels if you desire, & how to prepare paper, etc., for receiving oil pastels (whose oil content can deteriorate paper) & lots of other info very useful for anyone wishing to know technical stuff about the medium.
Elliot's book is a good companion to the one by Kenneth Leslie, & I consider myself fortunate to have both. But if you could only choose one, & it were available, I would choose Kenneth Leslie's book!
Oil Pastel a medium worthy of more recognition.......2005-10-11
This book is a dream come true for the lovers of the long under-rated medium of oil pastel. Despite the fact that this worthy artists medium was first commissioned by none less than Pablo Picasso, it has remained at most despised by 'serious' artists, as a tool for students or the kindergarten or regarded as a means for sketching or preliminary working of ideas.
John Elliot demonstrates with unbridled enthusiasm that oil pastel is not only an exciting form of expression but perhaps the medium of the future standing along-side oil, soft pastel and the usurper, acrylic as a real option for artistic expression.
The book is a joy to own and J. Elliot leaves no doubt as to the power and flexibility of this medium.
Everything is covered clearly and the illustrations again demonstrate the full versitality of oil pastel, both wax and the new water-soluble media. Instructions are clear and concise drawing from years of experience.
This book is perhaps the 'Bible' of the oil pastel.
At last oil pastel gets the recognition it desesrves.
