    Book Description

When planning buildings in which people are to work and live, the efficient use of natural daylight and solar energy is increasingly important. The challenge is to compensate the different lighting requirements in winter and summer. Integrated daylight deflection systems distribute light into the interior of buildings, utilize and store solar energy to save artificial lighting, air-conditioning and heating costs. Extensively researched and impressively illustrated with a large number of computer simulations and photographs of built examples, this volume is more than an introduction to the basic principles, functions, designs and calculation methods of advanced light-guidance technology for architects, lighting designers, building and climate engineers. In particular it provides detailed documentation of the new Retro-Technology systems, explaining the role they can and do play in integrated façade and building design and planning processes.

      Book Description

Designing an air handling system can be a challenging task given the vast arrary of systems options from which to choose. In this highly practical reference, HVAC engineers will find all the information and guidance they need to select the most cost-effective, energy-efficient system to satisfy the design requirements of a specific project. The only book available that focuses exclusively on central air handling systems, this comprehensive book explores the full range of designs for systems commonly in use today in all types of buildings. The author provides detailed information on more than 25 constant volume, variable volume, and hybrid systems--including single zone, terminal reheat, double duct, dual conduit, and hydronic heat pump systems. In addition, the book fully examines the differences between various system types, evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of each system, reviews basic heating and cooling loads and load variations, discusses the importance of psychrometrics in system design and selection, and outlines techniques for energy conservation and system retrofitting. Of special interest are the many diagrams that clearly illustrate all types of air handling system designs.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Air Handling Systems 101..........2004-01-09

This book looks at every variation of air handling design and puts all of the systems in a very concise and accurate text. It was written by a well regarded HVAC Engineer in Southern California; Tseng-Yao Sun.

      What this book does:
Breaks down virtually all air handling systems and their variations in a very simple and easy manner.

What this book does not do:
Articulate the intricate details of each system.

This is a GREAT book if you are evaluating and determining the system type in the building/facility you are reviewing. It addresses key aspects of the system and will allow you to identify the system. In addition to existing buildings/facilities, this book is EXCELLENT for new projects and they will outline the basics of the system functionality and operation.

Most engineering books delve too much into details that create wasted time and effort. This book succeeds with simple schematic diagrams. Good engineering practice is survived by simplicty; something this book does very well.

5 out of 5 stars A kimono and evening gown guide worth owning.......2007-05-30

As you all may know, this book is pretty much like the other three how to draw manga costume encyclopedia books, but each of them have their own theme of course. Inside this volume they give you some examples of how to correctly draw kimono's and evening wear. This book is comprised of two chapters, but I would have to say that they talk more on the kimono's than the gown section in this book. That can be a good thing, and it can also be a bad thing. I personally liked the kimono part in this book than the gown part. That is the whole reason I bought this book, because of the kimono part in here. The gown part in the second chapter is good too, but it seems to show a good bit of wedding shots than evening wear. They even give an example of two people dancing, which can be a plus if you need a ref shot for your manga. Basically this book is teaching you etiquette in both outfits, how to wear them, and how to correctly draw the outfits. The contents of this book includes:
                Chapter one Kimono:
A day in a kimono: Female character
A day in a kimono: Male character

All in all this book is the perfect kimono/ gown guide. I really enjoy this book, and it is very helpful when it comes down to the kimono sections. If you are having some trouble with kimono designs/ drawing the kimono and principles, then this book is so for you!! If you also need some help toward evening wear, then this book benefits as the double package!!! This book is also kid friendly due to this book having nude free scenes in it, but, I don't recommend this book for kids or anyone who is a beginner. Since this book really doesn't give you step-by-step guides on actually drawing the kimono's or evening wear. I do recommend this book for those who are intermediate to advance. Anyway, buy this book, it worth your time and money. Add it to your HTDM arsenal today!!

This book is full of great tips. It has hundreds of various poses and positions that can defintely help in the long run. It shows the creases in certain skirts and tops and also covers swimsuits, such as one and two-pieces. It even shows the styles from way back in ancient times with the Eqyptians and their swimsuits!

It is a great reference book for poses. There are not step-by-step instructions, but it is definetly worth the time and money. It's a definte keep on my How To Draw shelf.

                4 out of 5 stars A good book.......2006-11-28

Trust me when I say, some of the titles can be very misleading. Fortunately, this book was not misleading at all. This book has what the title suggests, sport wear. In the book, it shows you a variety of sport wear that characters wear in their active lifestyles. Not only does it have sporty wear, but they also managed to sneak in some fantasy style clothing as well as cheerleading outfits in there as well. This book has a good bit of poses that would be very useful, and it shows how the body would look in certain outfits. If you are looking for a book that helps you come up with some cute and sporty ideas for a sport genre manga then this is definately a must buy! Also, there is very, I mean very little nudity in this book, so I would also recommend this book for those who are offended by nudity.

4 out of 5 stars Lousy name, but inspiring designs.......2005-09-30

I was a little skeptical when I first saw the cover of this book, not to mention the title of this book. I think they titled it that so men would be drawn to it and buy it. But I must say this book is actually pretty good. It has some really creative ideas when it comes to fashion designs. You can also use the ideas to not only make sports wear, but anything your imagination can come up with. You could design simple bathing suits to active sports wear to even a hero's outfit or even yet a cool space suit. With this book you can even design a fashion that best suites a unique characters personality, that could have nothing to do with sports, the book is fantastically inspiring.

The only down fall is its awfully weak when it comes to men's. Not that very many men will have sexy sports wear, but neither the first or second Costume Encyclopedias have much of anything for the men. The whole How To Draw Manga series kind of left in the dark when it comes to men. They have one book for Male Characters and five for Female Characters.

Yet, this book is worth buying. But if you don't have the first Costume Encyclopedia, get that one first and skip over the second one.

While one would think undergarments are standard fixtures on manga characters, they can be unexpectedly tricky for artists to draw. This book includes more than 4,000 illustrations showing details of these garments worn on a figure in addition to a detailed history of intimate apparel. Moreover, it enables the reader to make practical use of the illustrations provided to create easily their own fantasy costume designs. This volume is chock full of ideas ready for use!

I almost bought the book until i LOOKed in it. It's basicly drawing girls in skimpy sexy clothes. If You like that kind of thing then shovel out the 20 bucks.

In this series of HTDM costume encyclopedia, Hayashi and morimoto team up once again to show you some different apparel for your characters. In the first couple of pages they give examples of fantasy wear, which they created through the use of unmentionables (bra, panties, corsets, etc...)Now, this book is pretty good when it comes down to underwear and all, but what can one truly gain form buying this book? Well for starters, if you are having trouble with drawing certain bra's and panties, or even pajama's(which is in here as well, but not many examples of it)can benefit you pretty well; then again, that is just about it. I guess alot of people won't find it helpful to them if they are not drawing a manga that's along the lines of golden boy, La blue girl, ikkitousen, and other various anime's along those lines of panty shots and etc. Another good thing that I noticed from this book is that they give examples of undergarment throught the centuries from different ethnicities, the down fall is they don't show alot of it, it's just examples. All in all, I would recommend this book for those who would like to learn how to draw under garments or for those who need these essentials for their manga. It all depends if you find this book helpful or not. I will make a recommendation though. If guys are looking for clothes that people wore through out the centuries from different ethinicities, then you are looking for HTDM Bishoujo around the world. They not only show you different races, but also show you what clothes they wore.On helpfulness I rate this book a 3 for those who can't really benefit from this book, and I rate it a 4 for my personal use.

5 out of 5 stars Fun to draw . . . and look at too!.......2007-04-20

This is a fun `How to Draw Manga - Intimate Apparel' book that I bought recently for my husband as a gift.

As its title implies, this is literally an encyclopedia of (illustrated) intimate apparel - which includes a wide variety of brassieres, panties, slips, tops, bottoms, stockings, garter belts, bustiers, camisoles, and other sexy sleepwear.

Most of the book is merely a presentation of the various garments. The real instruction doesn't start until the last section, "Drawing Intimates."

The sexiest tutorials are definitely the "Drawing Brassieres . ." and "Drawing Panties from Various Angles" - which include both tempting look-down and look-up (upskirt) views!

This section also has some fun trivia. Hey, did you know that when rendering women's undergarments - that panties should always be drawn with two lower seams (for the cotton panel) - while bikini bottoms should only have one? (After a quick check of my own undies - I found this to be generally true.) Bikinis should also be drawn as being made from a thicker fabric!

As a watch out, the sexiest - and only color picture - is the one on the cover!

For those who illustrate for a living, like cartoonist or fashion designers - this `How to Draw Manga - Intimate Apparel' can be an invaluable reference.

For the rest of us, this is also light entertainment for anyone (girl or guy) who enjoys viewing the feminine form. XOXOX

5 out of 5 stars Great reference for artists, not for hentai........2007-01-13

If you are an artist with serious problems of Girls reference, this is the best book you will find, also the other 2 encyclopedias, I own the 3 of them and believe me this are the best reference for drawingk, sculpting and others stuffs, just get it while its hot... cause it will be hot forever!

3 out of 5 stars Not really needed........2005-06-03

Ok all of us out there have a pretty good idea on how underwear should look and there's only so many different ways to draw them. I found the book to be a little dissapointing and seems repetative on the same subjects. What I did like the most was the fashion section through the ages starting with Ancient Egypt through to today. Though don't get too excited this section is 1/8 of the book and goes by quick. As for the rest, well I'd skip this one especially if you have a good imagination, you can come up with your own ideas as to how seductive or innocent your character's outfits should be.

"I understand the design, but I can't figure out the actually how to portray my character in the costume." Many have likely experienced this dilemma when trying to develop a character's costume and reached for a book on fashion as a reference. In this volume, manga characters appear as models, and the book illustrates aspects that serve as fashion points showing the characters in various poses and angles. This volume boasts more than 4,000 images. With this as reference, the reader should be able to design an original costume with ease by combining the collars, sleeves, cuffs, and other dress details provided.

I bought this for my daughter. I got 5 hugs ! She says that it has really helped her with her drawings and is well worth the money ! If your child loves manga - this book is essential.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Any Artist.......2007-09-23

If you're like me and you like to draw, sometimes the character and the pose come to you long before you finally think about the costume. This can be a problem, especially when your reference files don't contain the exact items you need. For those times, look no further than The Costume Encyclopedia (just the first in a line of helpful costume encyclopedias). Within you will find almost every article of clothing you'll need to create the costume you desire.

The benefit of this book is that it is obsessively detailed. There must be nearly 1,000+ illustrations (black and white) within, all of them exceptionally helpful. The authors seemed to have spared no effort in producing a work that has as many examples of as many articles of clothing as possible, from pants to capes to shirts to skirts and beyond. This truly is an invaluable resource. My only quibble with it is that its organizational schema could have been better thought through - it can sometimes been difficult to find the exact item you're looking for in the great mass of information, so I'd recommend invensting in some of those little sicky note flags so you can mark helpful areas. That said, an excellent effort. How To Draw Manga Volume 34: Costume Encyclopedia Volume 2 (How to Draw Manga), How To Draw Manga Volume 35: Costume Encyclopedia Volume 3: Sexy Sports Wear (How to Draw Manga), and How To Draw Manga Costume Encyclopedia Volume 4: Kimono And Gowns (How to Draw Manga (Graphic-Sha Numbered)) are also exceptionally helpful volumes and perfect additions to your reference library. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book!.......2007-07-16

Well, my wonderful daddy bought yet another great book for me. This costume encyclopedia is a great reference for dressing my characters in costumes. I do wish they would add at least a bit more apparel for the men, I mean come on! Just underwear isn't enough and besides, it's just plain creepy.

On the other hand, the clothes included are: Pants, Shorts, Capris, Skirts, Shirts, Jackets, Dresses & a brief lingere section. The other chapters are just collars, necklines & such.

Overall, this book was spectacular! You should totally get it. & it's a kid-friendly book. I know some of the other how-to-draw-manga books contain nudity, this on the other hand doesn't.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference, but could have been better........2007-06-04

This book provides lots of reference drawings, sorted by type of clothing. What I didn't like was the emphasis on some clothes, that don't really differ from others pictured on the book. The other thing I didn' like was the incomplete drawings. Only the first pages have complete drawings, while the rest have only upperbodies, legs, or fullbodies, but without faces. Given the talent of these artists, it would be very easy for them to provide complete drawings, with faces and expressions that match the poses. Summing up, a very good book, very useful for the manga artist that already knows how to draw bodies, but needs some help getting them dressed. Special note on the final secction, about folds.

5 out of 5 stars The Best refence yet!.......2005-04-28

This is one book I ever wondered what I did without. It takes a complex idea, such as drawing clothing, and makes it simple, easy and clean. The book is a treasure chest of examples and ideas that can help you define and polish your outfits. Often I flip through random pages and point, and whatever my finger falls on I design an outfit from, using other elements from the book.
As a previous reviewer started, a men's addition would be very nice. Instead we get a simple, half-page how-to on making a female form look more male. There is one page on men's undergarments, but that's the brunt of it. Otherwise, just use your common sence; a man is not going to want to wear a Medici collared, puffy sleaved shirt unless he's auditioning for Bishonen of the Year.
Still the lack of male content dose nothing to curb my enthusiasm for this book. It's a great buy for anyone studying art and fashion.
