Book Description
In this book, the author spent more than 4 years visiting hundreds of Japanese homes and learning as much as possible about their construction, design, furnishings, and relative merits. It is the only authentic record of the traditional home — mats, lamps, screens, gardens — from its general plan to the smallest decorative detail. 307 illustrations.

A Constant Source of Inspiration.......2007-01-03
I bought this book about 3 years ago from Amazon. So you'd think that it would be old hat by now. Yet I find myself picking it up at least once every few months to either refer to it for a construction detail or just to look for something new. What a wonderful resource for traditional Japanese design this book is.
Trained as a Zoologist, Morse put his scientific powers of observation and systematic description to work during the 1880's in producing the sketches and text that describes a world of everyday Japanese design right before it was swamped with Western influence and largely disappeared. There are plenty of books that can show you pictures of ancient Japanese temples and teahouses, but what about the method of constructing the roof of an ordinary 19th century Tokyo home? This was stuff that few people thought was worth recording for posterity. Which is why Morse's book is so unique and valuable to us.
Anyone with more than a passing interest in the way that things are built or designed would do well to put this book on their shelf. Interior decorators, architects, DIY types (such as myself), finish carpenters, contractors and furniture makers should all have a tattered, dog-eared copy of 'Japanese Homes and Their Surroundings' within easy reach. It is a constant source of inspiration.
A must-have.......2005-06-11
"Japanese Homes and Their Surroundings" is a great book. If you've any interest in traditional Japanese architecture, get this book. Edward Morse was an American who went to Japan in 1877 to study brachiopods. He ended up recording a vanishing way of life instead. He tells you how Japanese homes were built and why they were built that way. Not much escapes his eye. In serviceable prose and clear drawings, he tells us about carpenters and their tools, houses, furnishings, privies, fences and gateways, water supplies and gardens. Most of it he compares favorably to American and European counterparts.
Best of all, it's a Dover book and cheap.
A wonderful look at 19th-century Japanese domestic life .......2005-03-09
I picked up the Dover paperback edition at a library book sale and was charmed by the author's detailed drawings as much as the description of domestic life in 19th century Japan. Morse originally published this in 1885, barely 30 years after Perry's expedition, and traveled around Japan documenting as many houses and styles as possible (including those of the Aino culture). There are no photographs, but the intricate line drawings and intimate descriptions of functional households -- kitchens and cooking utensils, washing areas, sleeping quarters -- are minutely detailed and thoroughly described in the text. Not just a book for those interested in architecture but history as well.
Better than a coffee table book........2004-09-19
I purchased this book simply to get a quick overview of Japanese domestic architecture. The price is always right with Dover books so I just ordered it without any research. What a pleasant surprise to find myself reading a definitive work on the subject a few days later. The text is thoughtfully written and the illustrations skillfully done. As with any well written and illustrated book, color pictures are not overly missed. As a result of this book I find myself much more interested in Japanese architecture than I ever intended to be and heartily recommend it to anyone with an interest in home or interior design.
Well worth the money.......2000-02-03
This is a great book which describes in fine detail theJapanese home in the late 1800s. This book captures a period of timewhen the Japanese house still had its unique cultural style and hadn't been excessively influenced by american or european style architecture. The book is clearly written and there are many detailed drawings which illustrate the text's descriptions. It is an interesting book both for its architectural detail as well as for its historical perspective.

Math Text for Trade Schools.......2003-10-15
This book came up during a search for Sheet Metal techniques and practice. However, the contents are really basic level high school math with sheet metal based examples wherever that is appropriate. The figure on the cover has almost nothing to do with the book. The math is OK as far as it goes -- High school algebra 1 plus a small smattering of geometry and trig. The sort of math that is needed by those working on the shop floor with sheet metal. So if you dropped out of high school to go to work in construction and sheet metal is your trade, this is the book for you. If you are looking for sheet metal design, layout or fabrication, look elsewhere.

A Work of Art.......2004-06-09
I'm rather surprized that this book has not been reviewed but then maybe there aren't many sheetmetal workers looking for these books these days or maybe they just don't write reviews. I say that there probably aren't many looking for these books because most of what is in these books is now done with a CNC operated Laser cutter, Plasma cutter or maybe a Turret Punch. All you have to do is load some dimensions into a program and it magically does it all for you. If however you work in a shop without the requisite machine and computer or at home then this is the book for you.
Dickason wrote this book back in the days when all you had was a trammel bar, rule and set of dividers to mark out patterns for the obects to be constructed.
The book starts with the Radial line method of development and then moves onto the Paralled line method and then the Triangulation method. He covers the three methods three times introducing increasingly harder problems along the way. Each time elucidating a new concept. The next section is on the Method of Cutting Planes which is required for determining the joint lines between say a cone and a cyclinder. Until you have determined the joint line you can not develop the patterns required for each item. He has a section on Branch and Junction pieces and a section on Unusual Problems. He then finishes the book with a chapter on the two difficult subjects of Double Projection and Twisted Surfaces.
Throughout the book the often complex drawings are complimented with instructional text. There is a good Table of Contents and reasonable Index.
This book is not for the faint of heart as it requires much study but that is the nature of the subject and not the authors fault.
This also indicates why so many within the industry have a limited understanding of the various methods of development and when to use which method. Unfortunately it is most difficult to teach spatial perception. If you cannot visualize it you won't be able to make it.
Just a small note here about the authors other books which are once again of good instructional quality. He has written "Sheetmetal Drawing and Pattern Development"(ISBN 0-582-99482-90), "The Calulation of Sheetmetal Work", and "The Technology of Sheetmetal Work". All very good books in there own right. The second book on development is in his words "supplementary" to this book and is equally brilliant.
If you want to do any serious pattern development then this is certainly one of the few places to start. Dickason is an expert with a difficult subject and knew his subject very well.
It has to have a minimum 5 stars as it has very few peers.

Customer Reviews:
Great reference for press brake operators.......2007-01-16
This book is the perfect combination of theory and real life applications for press brake operators. The engineering is well explained; not too simple, yet not above an operators head. Any operator who reads this book will become a press brake expert. Highly recommended for designers, engineers, and operators.
Good balance between technical and practical info.......2006-07-10
I can't speak to the needs of industrial users, but for the small fabrication shop operator this book is an excellent resource. The writing is a good balance between technical info and practical, plain english descriptions of press brake tooling design and use.
The first chapter is an overview of press brakes. That wasn't particularly useful to me. The rest of the book, however, is full of practical information. The design of dies is covered, along with considerations for forming different types of metals, and the causes/solutions for problems encountered while using a press brake.
This book contains all the info I neded to design my own press brake attachment for my shop press, along with designing and using dies for various forming operations.

Automobile Sheet Metal Repair.......2006-08-15
Best primer on the basic metalurgy and techniques of straightening sheet metal on cars I've found. The material on welding is dated but the material on metal beating is timeless and detailed. Just slapped a couple dents out of my Austin Healey with a bit of this learning and I'm a happy restorer. This and Classic Car Bodywork by Martin Thaddeus reveals the secrets.

Wildfire 2.0 Sheetmetal Review.......2006-02-22
Although the content is O.K. I'm very disappointed with the book itself. It's all in black and white with no color. The pictures are not very bad- hard to see, especially with no color. The paper is very low quality and the entire book is only a quarter inch thick or so with a paper cover. If I had only paid $10-20 for the book it would be all right but $60 is a little hard to swallow. I realize this is a technical manual but for the price I believe it should be of higher quality.

Useful book in Sheet Metal Forming .......2006-11-10
I consider that the book presents in way simple many aspects of help practice, so much stops professional people or it stops people that recently intrude in the field of doubled of metals.
Excellent .......2006-03-22
This is really great book! Useful mathematical equations, and numerous illustrations. Everything you need to know about sheet metal processing and die design in nice layout, that is easy to understand and follow. I'm glad I purchased this book.
Sheet Metal Forming Processes and Die Design.......2006-03-10
The book is a quick read with many useful tables and rule-of-thumb calculations. Mostly, I enjoyed reading it. However, there were so many editing errors that I became disillusioned. For example, at one point there was a reviewer's comment left in the printed text, "I don't know what this means..." I hope the author revises and reprints in the future.
Practical.......2006-02-08
Excellent for begginers, very good for experient people, makes you remember a lot of basic and expert solutions.
Very Good.......2005-12-07
With over 30 years of my engineering experience I can say that this book is very good! It covers a lot of things related to the die design (blanking, bending, material economy, deep drawing tooling design) and it is definitely great addition to my library. Book is very ease to read and understand. Very practical design and layout as well.

Customer Reviews:
Unique compilation!.......2005-08-04
This is an excellent and relatively unique compilation of all the really necessary-to-know facts about current metalforming practises and technology. It is an essential read and necessary companion-handbook for everyone involved in the metalforming industry from the steel mill through to service centers and right down to the fabricator. Operational as well as sales people will benefit from the knowledge and be brought up to date with current practises and thought on this subject in especially Northern America.
It was rather expensive however, but one can understand that due to the specific and relatively small target market for this type of information, that there will be a cost to the low volumes. Anyone in the steel industry will know what I mean!
