Book Description
This updated comprehensive history of the American Civil Liberties Union recounts the ACLU's stormy history since its founding in 1920 to fight for free speech and explores its involvement in some of the most famous causes in American history, including the Scopes "monkey trial," the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, the Cold War anti-Communist witch hunts, and the civil rights movement. The new introduction covers the history of the organization and developments in civil liberties in the 1990s, including the U.S. Supreme Court's declaration of the Communications Decency Act as unconstitutional in ACLU v. Reno.

Excellent But Incomplete.......2007-09-11
This is certainly the best history of the ACLU currently in print and I heartily recommend it. The book adumbrates and celebrates the historic achievements of the organization that, no matter how vilified and maligned, EVERYONE turns to in the end. I have two quibbles, however.
The first problem is relatively minor. The author, in my opinion, takes too much care to make sure he doesn't offend anyone. The entire book could have passed a hypothetical "PC Review Committee" with flying colors. This should be compared to the flamboyant in-your-faceness of Charles Lam Markmann's classic pro-ACLU tome, "The Noblest Cry", published in 1965 ( and unfortunately now out of print).
My second complaint is more serious. Large parts of the ACLU's important work are simply ignored or mentioned in passing. There is literally not ONE WORD about school busing, one of the biggest civil liberties issues of the 1970s. The controversial issue of child pornography is only mentioned in passing, without even presenting the
ACLU position or the relevant court cases. I assume the author is trying to downplay the radicalness of the ACLU and present it as more mainstream than it in fact is.
With those two qualifications, I can highly recommend the book, if only because it's the best one that is reasonably up-to-date.
A Sprawling, Wonderful History of ACLU, Warts and All.......2001-02-05
Samuel Walker has created a wonderful book on the history of the ACLU, In Defense of American Liberties, that is a must for anyone concerned with the history of freedom of speech and the men and women who fought for them in America. This book shows the development from fringe to mainstream of the ideas shared by a group of people in the 1910's. The book is by no means hagiography as the darker moments of the ACLU are presented with clarity, such as their hounding and forcing out of Communist members simply for their beliefs. It is both very informative and truly entertaining. A wonderful book that demonstrates the importance the ACLU has had in the twentienth century shaping political ideas.

Comprehensive history of an American organization.......2006-12-02
Samuel Walker does an excellent job of explaining the role the ACLU has played in the course of American history during the 20th century. Whether you like or dislike the organization generally depends on what's being debated in the news and whose side you're on. Walker doesn't gloss over some of the more unpleasant stories from inside the organization, either. I found it very helpful in doing research for an English composition class, in which I had to write an essay outlining an argument I was defending.

The director of the Lucasfilm Archives says that before Return of the Jedi, it just never occurred to anyone to formally store and catalog the accumulated "stuff" associated with the Star Wars films. Stormtrooper helmets and lightsabers were crammed next to models of tauntauns and sandcrawlers in closets and cubbyholes. Only when George Lucas was surrounded by all this junk for a Jedi publicity shot did the Lucasfilm folks realize what an amazing collection they had.
That collection only grew when Lucas scored with the popular Indiana Jones trilogy, which added all manner of whips, swords, and idols to the archive. This photo-packed book chronologically surveys the collection's highlights: props, models, storyboards, backdrops, and sketches, spanning all six films. Fans of either (or both) series will be gratified by a glimpse at these oh-so-cool artifacts. Unfortunately, the text isn't quite as edifying as the pictures. Behind-the-scenes insights, such as the fact that Imperial Walkers were a late substitution for Norwegian army tanks and that Indy's shooting of the swordmaster in the market was a fatigue-induced ad lib, often take a back seat to unnecessary plot recaps and equally superfluous explanations (for example, that the Force is sort of like chi). Of course, the artifacts from the archive are the real attraction, and they don't disappoint. --Paul Hughes

Good Films, Good Book.......2005-06-17
I love archival books like the "From Star Wars to Indiana Jones: The Best of the Lucasfilm Archives" and this is one of my favourites, it's got tons of images from all the Star Wars and Indy movies. The text is somewhat unsubstantial, however the layout and design make up for any flaws. All this and quality you can expect from the best "Making Of" guy in the buisness, Mark Cotta Vaz. This makes for perfect coffee table reading for any film buff and a great price too. A great addition to any film fan's bookshelf.
Great Collection........2002-04-29
This book offers an inside look at the huge collection of the Lucasfilm Archives. Conceptual art, models, props, puppets, masks, and various other movie making elements from the original STAR WARS and INDIANA JONES trilogies are examined and the last few pages look at three or four items from other Lucasfilm projects including WILLOW and HOWARD THE DUCK. The text is more than just element descriptions and some of the information is interesting and rather fascinating. A great book for any STAR WARS and/or INDIANA JONES fan and a must for a Lucas buff.
Why George Lucas will always eclipse the Star Trek Franchise.......2001-11-29
This book is proof positive why George Lucas and Speilberg will always be superior to the Star Trek Franchise with their brand of movies. The pictures in this one are a must have for any fan of Star Wars or Indiana Jones. The complete story boards. Not just crude renderings. The masks, the designs that didn't make it into the movie. The characters in all their films are not by formula. All the Star Wars aliens and models from Return of the Jedi are in this volume. You can see how closely the story boards match what would eventually would become the movie.
Great pictures.......2001-07-26
Fun book to peruse. I'd have liked more details about construction of props or pics of props being built. Also, more "Star Wars" than "Raiders" despite the title.
Why Didn't Someone Think of This Before!.......2000-12-07
Last year a good friend loaned me this book, with the comment, "You're gonna love this..." I picked it up on a bus ride and started to read. That night, I finally put the book down after finishing the entire thing. This book is phenomenal. I have always loved Star Wars, and the chance to look at many of the models, etc. was a treat. The prototype monsters, characters, etc. were also a plus, but my favorite section was that dealing with the models of the Imperial ships. The Indiana Jones section was also incredible, and this was another favorite of mine. Although there has been a lot of hype around Star Wars stuff, and many books have been published around the making of the movie, Indiana Jones has had less coverage, so this book was a great resource. Just goes to show what can happen if you dig around in there for a few hours!

Living Large.......2006-04-03
I have lived in Indiana for 16 yrs and have walked, hiked and horseback rode all the popular spots. This book has already found me a ton of new exciting places to go!
State park rehash.......2000-06-26
I was disappointed. A large part of this book draws on the Indiana state park system. Granted, the parks have some wonderful trails, but trail maps are distributed when you enter the parks. This book gives you little of the adventurous or out-of-the-way.
Wander Indiana with this great day hiking guide.......2000-05-17
Hiking Indiana is an organized guide to finding your way around on foot. When I opened Hiking Indiana, the first surprise was its "workbook" format - the pages are perforated on the edge to be torn out and packed. It's really a book to be used and become as worn out as a hiker after a good day on the trails. The first pages include a Trail Finder chart and a state map with numbers matching the table of contents that is organized by North, Central and South regions of the state. There are 45 parks or cities as chapters that include several Trail Sites and Trails. Park Facilities are shown by key icons, miles listed and Trail Difficulty Rating that is shown by 1 boot for easiest and 5 for most difficult trails. The chart also shows Terrain/Landscape with checkmarks for hills, prairie/grass, forest, lake, wetlands, overlook and river/stream. I was also surprised to see historic trails and city trails such as Madison's Historic District Walking Tour, Columbus' Architecture Walk, and Indianapolis' Canal Walk and Eagle Creek Bird Sanctuary Loop. There's even a canoe trail for those, as they said, with extra hour to give feet a rest. There are maps of parks and trails, but you'll need your atlas or state road map to get to the site. The narrative is an easy read and informative. Sally McKinney includes cautions, such as the trail goes through remote, forested hill country and to let park officials know when you leave and expect to return, to check back in or park officials may go looking for you. Another caution is when you have to walk through shallow water - a creek without a bridge, and which trails to watch for plenty of droppings from waterfowl. Hiking Indiana throws in tidbits on the state's history. Ouabache State Park has a Wildlife Exhibit Loop with bison, and 'Did you know that a bison image decorates the Indiana state seal?' This is a book to leaf through and explore. I really liked Hiking Indiana since it is a good read, lets you explore places to go, and made it all interesting. I am ready and motivated to go from wannabe hiker to getting out the hiking boots.

Book Description
Wonder where to go hiking in Indiana? Author and naturalist Alan McPherson has answered that question with his latest guide book Indiana Best Hikes. Indiana Best Hikes addresses the 'where' and 'what' of the best hiking places in Indiana. The subtitle of this hiking guide could easily be A Guide to 106 Places and over 200 hiking trails in the Hoosier State.
For each of the 106 Indiana Best Hikes sites, the succinct text describes the site, gives highway and trail directions, hours, facilities, contact address and other nearby points of interest plus a detailed map (3 maps in 1) that shows state location, highway map and site map with trails. In addition, each of the 106 best hikes features at least one trail and as many as three, in specific detail, with separate maps.
The 495-page paperback is divided into three hiking regions: Northern, Central and Southern for ease of use. 70 black and white photos of the Indiana Best Hikes are interspersed within the text. The paperback guidebook measures 6 X 9.
The 106 best hikes were selected not only because they represent some of the last great places in Indiana, but also because the best hikes are best since they are accessible year around and pose no great hiking challenge for the general public.
