Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

The drama and beauty of historic homes in California are studied and displayed here in a deeply researched text and over 350 stunning color and over 50 black and white photographs. Southern California's Spanish Revival monuments are pictured here-such as Hearst Castle at San Simeon, the Adamson House in Malibu, Casa del Herrero in Montecito. You will enjoy Rancho Revival landmarks like the Lummis House on Pasadena's arroyo, and Will Rogers' ranch near Pacific Palisades. These are all different portrayals of the California Colonial, its romantic past and its manner of settling into California's climate and landscape. Vernacular and religious structures built between 1769 and 1848, during the Spanish Mission and Mexican Rancho eras, gave California its unique character; a look that was subsequently fictionalized in the revival architecture produced since those colonial days. Particularly influential on residential work, the colonial styles have indulged in the rich associations with Spain's culture-employing styles and ornament from the country's provincial Andalusian, Plateresco, Churrigueresco, and Desornamentado styles and its ever-present Mudjar crafts-or burrowed into its rustic pioneer roots and depicted as individual visions of earthy rancho haciendas.

Informative, needed less description and more diversity of photos. It shows Malibu and north to Hearst Castle but not much of the architectural detail in many of the Los Angeles, Los Feliz, Hancock Park or Santa Monica homes.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderfully-written and visually-stunning reference.......2002-09-14

Dr. McMillian's treatment of a beautiful and significant architectural tradition in this country is quite unique. She has written and assembled an exquisite volume that deftly bridges the gap between a dry technical analysis and a pretty coffee-table effort by offering the reader an excellent textual and visual presentation of the mission and spanish revival styles (and related styles) that emanated in Southern California in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Lesser-recognized sub-genre's like hacienda, rancho and Plateresco are also discussed, and the oftentimes confusing evolution and blending of these various styles is skillfully addressed. Hundreds of color photos beautifully complement the extremely informative historical analysis, providing the reader with a real taste of the various architectural and decorative arts elements that comprise these styles. Dr. McMillian's effort brings appropriate attention to an architectural tradition that defines Southern California more than any other. A more adept and satisfying one-volume treatment of this subject matter would be hard to imagine. Highly recommended.

For a beautiful companion volume that is equally well-written and accompanied by some stunning photography, check out the author's "Casa California" (1996).

Book Description

More than 500 period photographs explore the Spanish Revival movement (1915-1940) in architecture. Original Spanish and Mediterranean buildings inspired partrons on "the grand tour" in Europe to build for themselves these sturdy homes in the 20th century that reflect a strong Mediterranean heritage. Tiled roofs and floors, arched windows and passageways, and stone walls and floors characterize the style. Exquisite details are explored, both inside and out, from residential, commercial, and public projects. Sections in the book focus on exterior details including outdoor rooms and staircases, verandahs, patios, and courtyards, pools, fountains, chimneys, and garden gates. Inside, revel in beamed ceilings, fireplaces, tile details, lighting and flooring. In addition to dozens of private residences, this book tours retail and commercial spaces, churches, schools, libraries, theaters, and private clubs. Work by celebrated architects who helped pioneer the Spanish Revival movement is featured, including George Washington Smith, Wallace Neff, Gordon Kauffman, Morgan, Walls and Clements, and many others. Also, some architectural renderings and floor plans are included. Architects, designers, and remodelers will find inspiration for today's structures on every page.

1 out of 5 stars Spanish Revival Architecture.......2007-09-19

Lots of photos...problem is that they are all in black & white. And, some of the photos seem to be of poor quality or taken many years ago. The beautiful color jacket cover is misleading.

4 out of 5 stars Good in its niche.......2006-08-05

I LOVE this book, but it isn't for everyone. It is a fine book to add to your already existing collection on Spanish Revival. This book provides a survey of how Spanish Revival really looked in primarily the1920s and 1930s--not just the landmark buildings. You see high schools, churches, and lots of homes that do not appear in any other book. And how they were decorated during this period. I got a much better sense of the style as it was used by the common (OK, mostly wealthy) person.

Now let's discuss what this book is not: not a coffee table book with all pictures artistically staged and clear, not a written resource describing styles, not the first book for your library on Spanish Revival. I get the idea--purely my inference-- that Mr. Cook had been collecting pictures of Spanish Revival (old advertisements, postcards, etc) in his antique shop for years and one day he got the idea to put them into a book. Hence, the dust jacket write-up boasts over 500 photos and it must have (I haven't counted), but the captions provide only the information on the original source, e.g., ranging from only referencing the add the photo was from to providing the location, owner, and architect.

As for the overall quality, some photos are amazingly sharp, others a bit fuzzy, this is 1920s technology were talking about... Realize also, that a few photos are repeated (I suspect when the authors lacked enough examples to fill out the page) and a few categories, such as "Interior Details: Lighting" have only 4 photos.

I do not consider myself an expert, but have collected some books on this topic. Because I've had disappointments, here is one woman's recommendation for additional books:

Good first book to learn about the style and movement (and has nice photos): "California Colonial: The Spanish and Rancho Revival Styles"

Best overall value (price vs. architectural overview): "Red Tile Style"

If you are interested in the European images that inspired American Spanish Revival: "Architectural Details: Spain and the Mediterranean"

If you're wanting to know more about the Spanish/Mexican roots of Spanish Revival (not many photos): "Spanish-Colonial Architecture in the United States"

Coffee table books: "Casa California", "Casa Florida"

2 out of 5 stars Okay, but not exactly what I was looking for.......2006-04-08

The previous review of this book expresses my sentiments exactly. I wish I would have read it before purchasing.

2 out of 5 stars Your Money Can Be Better Invested.......2006-02-15

I was quite disappointed in this book, which as a previous reviewer stated, consists mainly of period photographs with little or no information. I have always admired and purchased Shiffer Press books because they are well-produced and written, and quite useful, so this book came as a surprise. As a fan and owner of this architectural style, I have aquired many original and reprints of source material (e.g., Newcomb, Sexton, Requa, Smith, Neff), as well as some of the excellent recent books like Red Tile Style, Casa California, anything by David Gebhard, and Patricia Gebhard's recent book on G.W. Smith). The old books feature useful information and illustrations that actually inspired other architects and builders of the times, and continue to do so in the present day. The better new books add to the lore and show us how well this quintessentially California style has aged and how it continues to be a relevant and interesting part of the California landscape. Part of the charm of the source books was the artistic b/w photography and the sharp reproduction of those photographs in the printed plates. The reproductions in Spanish Revival Architecture are fuzzy and faded -- totally without the moody charm of the originals and not very useful in their muddiness. In addition, many of the details shown in Spanish Revival Architecure's photographs are not the best examples available. In contrast, the Shiffer Press' California Colonial is a fine and useful book that is worth the investment. If "Spanish Style" is really your thing, you'll also get more bang for you buck buying the available reprints of Rexford Newcomb books (alas, someone needs to reprint The Spanish House for America) and the excellent Smith and Neff books. If you have a sizeable book budget, first editions of source books, including Newcomb's several volumes, the late '20's Requa portfolios Architectural Details: Spain and Mediterranean and Old World Inspiration for American Architecture, and R.W. Sexton's Spanish Influence on American Architecture and Decoration, would all be worthy additions to your library.

5 out of 5 stars Something For Everyone!.......2005-12-21

This book is one of the finest and most filled with detail on Spanish Revival Architecture that I have ever seen. It is superbly arranged by catagory with pictures of architectural details such as doors, steps, lighting fixtures, etc.. The designs are actual photographs taken of the structures and details when they were originally built. It is also the most comprehensive guide to the proper furnishings for the structures as used in the period. Architects should take note of the scale and ballance of design as opposed to many things built in recent years that have totally out of proportion exagerated features. This book is a must for anyone vaguely interested in Spanish Revival Architecture, whether an architect, historian, owner of a structure of the period or planning a structure of this style.

4 out of 5 stars How to Draw Manga Volume 12: Giant Robots.......2007-01-19

      Ok, how to start.
I can say that this book is awesome... and that it would teach you a good deal about robots and their parts and different things you could use for designs. I couls also say it teaches you a good deal about female robots and about weapons.

I could say that... yes... That all of what I said is true, BUT, it is also lacking some things you would expect from a HTDM (How To Draw Manga) books. Some things you would expect from a book about giant robots is learning how to draw the different parts of a robot, instead they show you examples and expect you to figure the rest out.

You would expect in a book about giant robots tons of examples and pictures of different guns you could make, but they decide that they will just show you a few and then show you a few gun parts that you could combine, hoping that you will make more guns out of those few pieces.

Some people cut this book down by saying "This book doesn't teach you how to draw anything near gundams or transformers." To those people I can only say one thing, "If you want a book on drawing gundams or transformers, then get one for drawing gundams and transformers."

I mean, with what I just said a few paragraphs ago you might think, "Wow, this book must suck." But I say no, that is not the case, this is not a book for gundams or transformers. This is a book for drawing your own robots, your own original robots from your imagination, your own robot that doesn't belong to gundams or the transformers universe.

I said that they only show you a few weapons for examples, but this is not a book about weapons, but robots. I give this book 4 stars because this is worth the four stars. Some might say that this book is not worth the money, but I tell you... THIS.. BOOK.. IS WORTH IT!

Sincerly to all you budding manga fans,
      Frothy the Beerman

First of all this book has some decent examples of individual component parts of robots/mecha that will help you to realize decisions that must be made for your own designs, and while the intentions of the author is to give inspiring examples of fully finished robots and mecha also, the designs are not that great or dynamic. In fact, many of the robots are just flat out hideous looking. In other words, there's nothing here on the level of Gundam or Transformer type designs, but on the other hand it does give insight into components parts like hands, joints, weapons, etc.

5 out of 5 stars This book kicks "bot"!!! (okay, bad pun).......2004-12-21

I went to borders yesterday with a gift certificate, yearning for one of hikaru hayashi's "how to draw manga" books. So, I bought the best looking of them there, called "Giant robots".

It is AWESOME!! It teaches you to convert simple human figures into robots (note: it only tells how to do that with girls) It shows the girl anatomy, showing some butts and boobies, but DON'T LET THAT HOLD YOU BACK FROMING BUYING IT!!! It's worth the money, Alot of manga books show the "PARTS" of the atnatomy, but this series isn't a "how to draw playboy" book! It's for proper form, not to be porny. my first mech looked AWSOME AND SO PRO-LIKE!!

      +=good -= bad/ disapointing ?= what/why the heck?!

+ eat your heart out, "mech mania how to draw mechs and cool space ships"!

+ a must buy if your a sucker for robots and mechs

      +weapons

      +special edition :)

      + mechs(duh)

      + transformers

      +robot parts and examples

+ how to turn pretty much anything into a mech with one simple
      step!

      - don't get if your little brother or sister will make fun of you for getting abook with the female anatomy in back of book forever (well, you still might wanna buy it)

      - doesn't tell how to draw pilots (sadly, becuase there is a good image of one on the back cover

? what the heck is with the robot with a die for a head??!

Anyway, I highly suggest this book to any manga artist or fan.

4 out of 5 stars Giant Robots Demystefied.......2004-11-23

What I really liked about this book is how it translates a robot body by using the basic human shape and making it blocky and reshaping it accordingly. (Mostly because I was arguing with someone that this is the right was to draw robots and he said otherwise - ha! ^-^) This way, you can use your knowledge of anatomy and easily, with some practice, make robots as well.

Hayashi simplifies matters by classing each part as much as possible with shapes. For example, eyes being either circular, triangular, or squarish. He takes the same concept to the body, arms, and other areas making easy to understand how to robots are drawn. He even shows how you can get ideas from everyday objects, animals, and humans and turn them into robots.

I was surprised not to see any powered suit-types but then I guess this is strictly robots and powered suits is more of an armor. Otherwise, you can use the information in the last chapter of how to draw female robots and apply it to worn suits.

If you love drawing mecha, I suggest you pick up HTDM Mech. Drawing as well.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but lacked some important "mecha" parts........2004-08-29

Wether you're designing your own mecha and want to make them more "realistic," or just beginning to get into the entire mecha genre; this would be a great book for inspiration.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who's even partially interested in giant, walking "death-mobiles." There's lots of good ideas for the externals of mecha, and what their functions are.

However, it didn't earn the fifth star only because it had no information about the cockpit or any of the various power sources that are often talked about in mecha animes or manga comics. And a section on the various parts of a cockpit would have been extremely useful.

But on the plus side, it had useful information about joints, weaponry, and arm structure. It even used examples of a crane and compared the movement to a mecha. I also really liked all the different military weaponry displayed. In fact, there's a good 4 or 5 pages devoted to missile launchers, rifles, machine guns, etc...

Like one of the reviewers said, though, this book is really useful when used in conjunction with "Mecha Mania," which describes differences in Japanese and American mecha. And let me tell you, there are differences.

The last part, which is on female based mecha, is quite comical. There's even a "playboy bunny" type mecha, which I found quite hilarious. But in its own twisted way, the techniques can be applied to any type of mecha and even can be used for inspiration. But I guess any of the "How to Draw Manga" books has quite an array of useful techniques that could be applied to anything.

Hopefully a counterpart to this book will be published to fill in the holes left by this one, but it is, after all, the basics of drawing Giant Robots.
