Book has given me some ideas.......2007-03-30
The book is well illustrated and true to the topic. I thought a little too much time was spent on the dimensions of the illustrated work in how the book need to be adjusted for the size of the book and not any time spent explaining how the woodworkers of the time accomplished the work, Example how was a flute cut with the top end round and the bottom end flat. How are tongues added to a fluted column? There are no explanations of the wonderfully illustrated woodworking just where the work is located and how to measure the work.
A Great Book for Sure, Including Strong Support from Authors.......2007-01-22
"Federal Style Patterns 1780-1820" is the culmination of an astounding research project. The detailed drawings are based on design elements from homes built during the Federal Era in the New England region, and include detailed images of cornices, door and window casings, chair rails, baseboards and more.
All drawings are captured in a variety of formats on a CD-ROM that comes with the book, which is a helpful tool for modern day designers hoping to faithfully reproduce the elegance of Federal Style architecture.
For some time now, I have been fascinated with the Federal Style, so much so that I decided to decorate and furnish my new office as if it were a page from history, circa 1815. I was a bit confused how to adapt a door arch to my particular circumstance, so I e-mailed the authors of this book, MaryBeth Mudrick and Lawrence D. Smith, for advice. I was most pleased with the prompt and professional reply I received from them. Throughout the duration of my project, which stretched out for many months, MaryBeth and Lawrence provided invaluable guidance at many critical junctures, always with patience and a friendly touch. With my copy of their text close by at all times, these pros led me toward a Federal Style look that far exceeded my original expectations. Thomas Jefferson would have felt right at home!
Elegant, exhaustive and authoritative.......2005-09-13
Oh, this is an elegant book, with highly detailed drawings of every molding, mantels, doors, room designs, etc. that you can imagine, all in the beautiful American Federal Style. In this book, you can 'invade' historic homes and 'walk out' with measured detailed drawings of all of the best features -- without anyone catching you in the act.

Extraordinary watercolor, great teacher.......2007-01-03
A beautifully printed hard cover book by an extraordinary watercolor artist. The book is filled with outstanding examples of landscapes, cityscapes from all over the world. In addition to being an inspired World class watercolor artist, Robert Wade is also a great teacher, the book is filled with practical advise and hands on lessons on color mixing, painting people, skies, glazing, location painting and many other subjects.Just to be able to look at his outstanding paintings would easily justify buying this book.
Understanding Watercolor.......2006-11-04
Excellent handbook for the serious watercolorist. Robert Wade has a great approach to some of the more difficult aspects of painting with watercolor. He is brief, to the point, yet his explanations make sense! Enjoyable reading and a great reference tool.
I wish I discovered this earlier!.......2006-08-13
What a wonderful book with terrific instructions and insights. Replaces 20 books in my collection which don't come close to the wisdom this book provides.
My favorite watercolor book.......2006-06-25
I have a library of over 60 watercolor books, and this is by far my favorite. I also own all of Wades's tapes, and his new CD. I find them to be an extension of the book. I took a workshop from a famous watercolor teacher who had us doing wash on top of wash. She must have gotten the idea from Wade as he has a section on just that topic. He covers washes on top of finished paintings that changes the character of the painting completely. A fasinating book that I return to over and over again.

Not quite what I was looking for.......2006-01-16
Artists and examples were not as varied as I would have liked. It lends itself more to keeping a watercolor flower journal than for techniques on painting floral pictures.

Customer Reviews:
This is material that has appeared before!.......2006-07-09
Be warned: If you have used other books on Chinese painting, there is a good chance you have seen the material in this volume before. It is an amalgamation of material on Chinese brush painting culled from several sources, including 1) work by Pauline Cherrett and 2) Wang Jianan and Cai Xaoli's Oriental Painting Course. There is nothing, however, in the book or the Amazon product description that gives you any indication of this!
That said, if you are a beginner this might be a good book for you. It seems like they've taken their material from good sources. You might, however, be better off learning a consistent approach from a single author. Your call. For me, I'm returning it.

Comprehensive Guide for the Experienced.......2004-12-01
If you have no idea where to start with painting and drawing I recommend "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain".
This Artist's Handbook is a terrific resource for those with some experience who are looking to expand their range of skills.
The section on using pastels was particularly helpful.
A great value, quality art book!
This book is a poor guide for beginners & no "Artist's hndbk.......1998-09-21
This book is of little use to beginners as it does not offer a progressive method to help one learn to either draw or paint. It is most certainly not an "...Artist's Hanbook" as it doesen't even begin to touch on the interests and problems of artists. The first book I would recommend to beginners and/or intermediate/advanced students for learning how to learn to draw is THE NATURAL WAY TO DRAW by Kimon Nicolaides. For beginning Painters I would recommend LEARNING [or STARTING} TO PAINT IN OILS by Bernard Dunstan.
Best art instruction book.......1997-12-14
By far the best book I have ever read to learn how to paint and draw

useful book.......2007-04-08
It's a pity that this book has not been reprinted. I found it in the library, and felt, after reading through it, that it is one of the better books for beginners on water-colour painting. It provides simple exercises in abstract painting, as well as figurative, landscape and still life water-colours. There are also tips on painting nudes and animals. Best of all, it shows how these simple techniques were used by the great masters like Delacroix, Gauguin, van Gogh, Renoir, Klee and Cezanne to create beautiful paintings. Techniques are supplemented by reproductions from pages of the great masters' sketch books. This is a simple but effective book.
A book for someone who want to be an artist.......2001-02-13
At first I only want to find some information for painting with watercolour. But when I read this book, it is very encouraging me. I have never study a watercolour with such depth as the book has directed me. It really helps me to appreciate great masters work. You will feel yourself able do the same as the book tell you. Also, it is simple and not too complicated to understand.
