Gustav Stickley's own compilation of the best of his designs.

5 out of 5 stars Original Work.......2007-07-29

Please understand that the author of this book, Gustav Stickley, is founder of the original Arts and Crafts movement which evolved to American Crafstman in the United States in the early part of the 20th century. This book is in fact the original work from that time period, so is dated in its composition, but, of course, an historically significant piece of literature.

2 out of 5 stars An OK Read.......2007-04-10

This book has very poor sructural building plans. It informs of the classic arts and craftsman period and how it effected design. It did not inspire nor reveal any proceedure's on how certain designs were accomplished.

2 out of 5 stars There are better Craftsman Books.......2007-01-16

I was dissappointed in the poor illustrations and lack of depth on the topic.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful houses, great interior ideas.......2001-03-28

This is a reprint of a house plan catalog from 1909. These books are actually exact reprints of original plan books from the turn of the century (1880-1925, roughly). Dover adds little or no modern explanations, just presenting the catalog as it was. So when one looks to review these books, one isn't really judging the modern-day publisher, or editing, or writing. The only modern element is the accuracy of reproduction- in some cases, if pages in the originals that Dover found are damaged or torn, that page is reproduced in the original with the tear, smudge, blot, or hole showing. So to judge the books, one has to compare each one to others of its kind, and then to decide whether the material in it is thorough and complete according to the standards of its time. Since there are several dozen of these catalogs published by Dover, we have the basis for such a comparison.

Stickley and the Craftsman school of design are well known. Many people own bungalows, or admire them even if they don't own them. What getting a book such as this does, is give a person insight into the details of the lifestyle of the time, of the philosophy of the architects/designers, and so on.

This particular book is one of my favorites. As with other Stickley catalogs, it includes several essays. The first one is "The Simplification of Life: A Chapter from Edward Carpenter's book called 'England's Ideal'". This essay resonates today, with people who are looking to get away from some of the modern excesses of possessions and displays of wealth, to a simpler life. There is also a review of another book, with quotes from it: "The Art of Building a Home" by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin.

One of the features of this catalog is that along with the exterior view and floor plan of every house, there is an extensive written description. For many of the houses there are drawings of the interior, with suggestions for furnishings. There are also examples of what types of light fixtures one might use. The written descriptions, in some cases, even include alternate ways to finish the house to save money or to adapt it to a particular type of location. Most of the illustrations are drawings/paintings; there are a few photographs, but not many. The drawings of the interiors include wallpapers and curtains. One illustration even shows a Craftsman piano! There are some concrete/cement houses, including ones mixing concrete with wood construction.

There are a few houses in the book without indoor bathrooms, which is not unusual for the period, but most have a full bath, and some have two bathrooms. Almost all have extensive built-ins: sideboards, bookcases, benches and settles, shelves. There are illustrations of the kitchens; while built-in kitchen cabinets as we know them now were not common at the time, these illustrations show kitchens furnished with the cabinets and tables that were common, and show the placement of stoves, water heaters, etc. There are also some wonderful examples of inlaid decorative wood flooring, and large sections on Craftsman furniture, metal work, and fabrics and needlework.

One of my favorite things in the whole book is "Two Inexpensive but Charming Cottages for Women Who Want Their Own Homes." It's difficult for us to imagine now, how radical an idea that was - that women might want to own their own homes without necessarily getting married. Recognizing that even if she works, a woman's income at that time would be significantly less than a man's, Stickley designs these homes to be economically built. He describes how two or three single women might manage to share such a home, making it more affordable. Very forward-thinking for the time!

In sum: this is more than just a plan book; the only bad point is that if this is your first exposure to plan books, then the subsequent ones you read will seem plain and lacking by comparison. Definitely should be in the collection of anyone interested in turn-of-the-century architecture or restoring houses.

This book assisted us in the redesign of our home in the craftsman tradition. A good reference for us to formulate our ideas, and for our architects to see what we liked. Worth the price

Book Description

Take a tour through twenty-five modern log homes reborn in the Arts & Crafts tradition, and witness how Craftsman style combines with the latest in log hybrid architecture to create a totally new and unique genre of building in The Arts & Crafts Cabin. In this new title from log building expert Robbin Obomsawin, the rich Arts & Crafts heritage of the late 1800s that rebelled against mass-produced goods and the opulence of the Victorian era melds beautifully with the ideals of log home design and cabin living, where a simple life and appreciation for fine craftsmanship are held in the highest esteem. This new hybrid style incorporates the exquisite workmanship and sophistication that have become hallmarks of Arts & Crafts design with the warmth and comfort of log elements to create homes inspired by nature, creativity, and simple beauty. With one of the industry's premier photographers, Roger Wade, and the log industry's most prolific and respected author, Robbin Obomsawin, The Arts & Crafts Cabin uses spectacular color photography, floor plans, and compelling historical text to showcase how the principles and philosophy of William Morris, Gustav Stickley, and Charles and Henry Greene combine with modern artistry to create some of the most exciting residential and recreational architecture being created today. Robbin Obomsawin is the construction manager and general contractor for Beaver Creek Log Homes. Robbin has served as vice president of the International Log Builders Association for Handcrafters and is the author of Small Log Homes, Best Log Home Plans, The Not So Log Cabin, and Log Cabin Classics. She lives in New York State.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A lovely book with a few good ideas.......2007-07-23

I purchased The Arts & Crafts Cabin for my wife for Christmas, as we are building a new home this year. The book is chock-full of beautiful photographs by Roger Wade, who is the preeminent "log cabin" photographer, whose work graces most of the timber-frame and log-cabin oriented publications. The text is well-written but not particularly memorable. You buy this book because it looks lovely, and it is a favorite flipper on our coffee-table this summer.

There are a great many more interior images than exterior elevations -- a minor disappointment because we were at least as interested in gleening good ideas for exterior design. This book has many more yellow stickies marking pages than any other in our collection, so that tells you something.

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas for building an Arts & Crafts-inspired log or timber framed home.......2006-10-01

This is an incredible book! This book reminded me of my trip to the Canadian Rockies - but not because of the architecture. There, every time I drove around a curve, the scenery was more beautiful than before. The same is true about this book. Every time I turned the page, the photos were more inspiring. And it wasn't just the photos. The book itself captured the spirit of the Arts & Crafts style. The quality of the photos, the layout of the pages, the selection of fonts, even the binding of the book showed craftsman-level attention to detail.

The book begins with the history and concepts of the Arts & Crafts movement and then shows and discusses new interpretations of the philosophy. The next section discusses ideas for incorporating key elements of the style such as sheltered porches, built-ins, and much more.

Note that this book does differ from some of Robbin Obomsawin's other books. Most notably, she does not fully explore a single house in each chapter. You will not find floor plans of the houses discussed - something I missed but that didn't fit this layout. Also, remember this book is titled The Arts & Crafts CABIN. That does not necessarily mean log cabin. There are several examples of log homes but with a stronger focus on log-element homes with more of a timber-frame feel. But many of the ideas can work in a pure log home - at least we hope to incorporate many of them in our log home.

3 out of 5 stars Misleading but beautiful.......2006-08-17

Being familiar with some of Robbin Obomsawin's other books, I bought this book expecting detailed house plans and handcrafted log architecture. After all, it's called "The Arts and Crafts ***Cabin***," right? And the picture on the front of that beautiful stained-glass door shows logs, doesn't it?

Well, this book is beautiful. You'll drool over the pictures. but a planbook it's not. And a log-building book it's not. And none of the residences here would qualify as a "cabin," most are opulent estates. There's nary a plan in the entire book. And almost none of the houses shown are built with logs as a primary element. Most are timberframes; many pictures show no log elements at all!

If you want to learn a bit about Arts and Crafts architecture or decorating, you may find some ideas here. But if you are designing a floorplan for a handcrafted log home and want it to have an Arts and Crafts feel, unfortunately, this isn't the right book.

4 out of 5 stars great resource for timberframe and log accent building..........2005-09-14

I liked the quality of the photos. The detail design pictures were especially helpful. I also liked the links to the resources. I would recommend this book to others who have an interest in timberframe and arts & crafts design.

Book Description

A traditional log structure was held together by gravity. Logs were carefully cut to length, and notched at the joining points to ensure a very tight fit, great stability, and weather-tightness. The notches were also beautiful and functional as the dovetails of a master cabinet-maker.

Here, Allan Mackie shows a complete selection of notches for corner joinery, roof beams and trusses and lateral grooves (for seating a stacked log firmly along the length of another wall log; and timber framing techniques).

Clear instructions and profuse illustrations and drawings make this a completely detailed manual for the log builder.

2 out of 5 stars Not the bible I expected.......2003-08-12

I was extremely disapointed with the content of the book. I definitely can't say that I would be able to build a log home with the insufficient information provided. I found explanations were confusing, unclear and not detailed at all. It seems that the author is assuming everybody knows how to build a house. There was not enough pictures or images to illustrate some of the most important steps of making a log home (e.g. scribing the logs...). I find this book may be interesting to get familiar with the basics of log building but it's definitely not a technical reference for a builder wannabe.

5 out of 5 stars Good Textbook.......2001-07-19

Very thorough treatise on the subject of log home construction. This text does not give details on wiring or plumbing in great depth, but that would have expanded the volume to 400-500 pages, largely of work covered in several other trade-specific books. No, this is a book on building a log structure, and as such gives propper technical instruction on how to safely perform intricate and delicate tasks with large tools on large logs to form a comfortable dwelling. Or, if the task seems harder than you thought, to knowledgably oversee the work of others. I would buy this one again.

4 out of 5 stars Clear and concise, great pics and drawings - good stuff!.......2001-03-29

Allen Mackie's the original starting point for the resurrgence of the craft of log building and can be traced to every major log building project built in the past 30+ years around the world! This book is a good how-to and often used by owner builders and students alike with great results! I just wish he would do something on log roof support systems in greater detail and also a new revised edition of "The Picture Book of Log Homes"! We're looking for the day! Lasko School of Log Building - Bill Lasko

1 out of 5 stars Rotting Logs?.......2000-12-08

....The terms were very hard to understand for someone not already extremely familiar with log homes. I had to ask my husband several terms and he wasn't even sure what they were.

Last weekend I attended a two day class and learned how to build a REAL log home, put on by the Log Home Builder's Association. I learned a million times MORE than this book or Mr. Mackie could have ever have taught and the house will last so much longer.... Wait for DeWell Ellsworth's book to come out. You'll be grateful!

5 out of 5 stars The diffinitive book from a master woodsman on log building.......1999-09-17

I have read all the Mackie books and this one is by far one of the more important. He rambles a little about the Canadian woods, polotics, etc., but worth reading every bit of what this master has to say. Detailed instructions and excellent diagraming make this and all the other Mackie books a must in any woodspersons library. If you want difinitive information on how to build with logs, whether you are a do-it-yourselfer or a pro, this is the book.

4 out of 5 stars Paper piece some beautiful flowers :).......2003-11-06

The book contains 101 beautiful flower blocks, and instructions for 3 projects using these blocks. All blocks and projects are shown in full color.

I'm not a beginner paper (foundation) piecer so I didn't pay all that much attention to the directions at the beginning of the book, although at a quick glance, they do look quite detailed and well thought out, and there are lots of "how-to" drawings.

Block size is NOT shown on the individual patterns. The block sizes are listed in the General Directions at the beginning of the book. [I think they should be listed on each block - my memory isn't what it used to be]. The color photograph of the block is not on the same page as the pattern, so you need to refer back and forth for color placement. There is a "grey tones" drawing for each pattern, but I don't find that very helpful - it should be in color (either a drawing or a photograph). Multi-piece patterns are NOT separated, and I find the bold lines (separating the pieces) hard to distinguish from the piecing lines. Seam allowances are also not included. Personally, I find it annoying to have to photocopy the pattern, then cut it apart and add (or account for when sewing) the seam allowance. Lots of people don't mind, tho, so I might be in the minority :). The assembly directions for multi-piece patterns are clearly diagrammed.

I like my patterns to be done a certain way, and in this book, they are not. However, I still love the book because the patterns and projects are gorgeous, and shown in full color. The patterns range from fairly simple to extremely detailed, so there is something for most skill ranges. If you like florals and you like paper (foundation) piecing, I think you'll enjoy the projects in this lovely book :)

            3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-11-22

Christopher Hart is practically a one-man publishing industry. He has written a variety of books about how to draw comic book superheroes, as well as books about how to draw funny cartoon animals. He does a fairly good job of explaining how to draw, but his own art is mediocre. There are a lot of other books on the market that are very similar to this one. I recommend Drawing Dynamic Comics by Andy Smith.

3 out of 5 stars Too tittilating for the kiddies. Rate this one PG-17........2004-12-03

I bought this book for my 9-year-old nephew and quickly realized it wasn't suitable for young audiences. Like almost all comic book heroines, these gals are soft porn (C'mon: if the girls in this book were walking around in real life they would tip over from the heft of their pointy boobs alone!). I can actually live with that; it seems to be some sort of right of passage for boys, and so be it. However, in the author's process of teaching the reader to be anatomically correct in their drawings, and to build the comics from the ground up, he presents lots of topless ladies that are inappropriate for kids my nephew's age. I shipped it back and am getting the book on cartoon animals instead. Just wish I had known before I ordered it.

2 out of 5 stars Not much help!.......2001-08-31

This book is pretty pathetic. The instruction is minimal and the art is just so average it's not even funny. You would at least hope that someone telling you "how to" could do it themselves. Get drawing the marvel way it's not perfect but it beats this hands down.

2 out of 5 stars decent for beginers.......2001-08-23

If you have little to no cartooning talent what so ever the go for this book. If you're halfway decent all ready dont bother. The writer/artist is an obvious amature and to my knowledge has never worked on a major comic. It does have a few good points but not many. I personaly found this book to be a waste of my time, if you are looking for a good instructional book for creating comics i suggest "HOW TO DRAW COMICS THE MARVEL WAY" which is much more in depth than Mr. Hart's book.
