Book Description
Plywood is arguably the most modern design artifact: it is a material born of natural wood and formed by vigorous industrial processes that can assume the most organic of shapes through bending, laminating, and molding. plywood truly fulfills that most modern of dreams: bridging the gap between technology and nature.
Bent Ply is the first book devoted to plywood in modern design. The book consists of two parts: the first, an illustrated history of plywood (tracing its origins to ancient Egypt, circa 2900 BC); the second, an annotated journal of the making of a piece of bent plywood furniture, from the forest to the showroom.
Bent Ply contains numerous illustrations of the classics of bent ply design, including furniture from Alvar Aalto, Michael Thonet, and Charles and Ray Eames, and examples of its appropriation by the military: John F. Kennedy s PT109 boat and the DeHavilland Mosquito were both fabricated from plywood.
Anyone interested in furniture design, woodworking, or materials will be fascinated by Bent Ply.
Customer Reviews:
bent plywood process described.......2007-03-13
bent ply by dung ngo and eric pfieffer takes an in depth look at the forming of plywood from it's early stages at the turn of the century up through the mass-production techniques of today. the authors have compiled detailed information on everything from how plywood veneers are made to the construction of molds for forming. the end of the book contains a wide variety of examples of bent ply furniture. the book even comes bound in plywood! a must for anyone with curiosity about forming plywood.
THE BEST ON PLYWOOD.......2005-07-25
This tome does justice to plywood and all its possibilities, and its contributions to date to modern and modernist life. Great rare history of industrialized wood (bentwood too). A must read for modern furniture fans.
Plywood Makes for a Really Hardback Book.......2005-05-24
There are paperback books and hardback books, but I don't think that I've ever before seen a book that was as hardback as these. The front and back cover are made of plywood. Fitting I suppose. Certainly interesting you your bookshelf.
Inside, the book is divided into three main sections.
The first is a history and description of the uses to which bent plywood has been put to in the past. Surprisingly the first patents on plywood go back to 1895, just about the time that the steam engine was becoming powerful enough to spin a log against a slicing knife. Continuing the history through World War II talks about (and shows pictures of) plywood airplanes.
The middle section is on the production of the plywood furniture, it starts with the bare logs and how they are cut into veneer and finally put into bent-ply furniture. It talks about a bent ply desk designed by Mr. Pfeiffer. This desk has veneer made in Latvia, the assembly of the desk is in Italy, and it is produced for the American market.
The last section of the book shows a wide selection of furniture articles, illustrating what can be done with bent ply.

Book Description
Use The Simple Art of Napkin Folding to duplicate those beautiful napkin folds you've admired at elegant restaurants and memorable events. It's easy with Linda Hetzer's detailed step-by-step directions and illustrations. Using cloth or paper napkins, create standing triangular-shaped folds (the "Tavern") for dinner parties. A few accordion pleats transforms a piece of cloth into the "Poinsettia." Need festive ideas for a children's birthday party? Make "Sailboats" or "Paper Airplanes." Graduate to more intricate designs that combine napkins with silverware, flowers, and wineglasses.
Special features include
- A stain removal guide for heirloom linens and synthetic fabrics
- Easy-to-follow instructions for making napkin rings
- Graphs for embroidering initials on napkins
- Instructions for stenciling your own napkins
Filled with inspired ideas, The Simple Art of Napkin Folding turns any square of fabric into a work of art.

The Simple Art of Napkin Folding.......2007-01-26
Helpful book has many ideas for those who still like to set a nice table and actually use cloth napkins.
Great book.......2007-01-13
I like this book. It has a lot of cute folds, it is easy to follow and the book is laid out well. It even has a section on some folds for children. The only thing that could possibly make this book better would be if it was in color.
easy to follow.......2006-11-03
I bought this book after considering several others on line, and now I won't need to buy another. I wanted something that was easy to understand and follow to make the dinner table a little something special for my wife after she comes home from work. Having dinner ready was just not enough for me, and thought about the napkin presentation. This book has more than you will ever need, and each one is clearly drawn out and easy to understand. Money well worth spent.
Love it!.......2005-09-27
This book has easy to follow instructions and is very informative about the history of the napkin folds. My husband smiles when he sits down to eat. It's fun decorating the table now.
Somewhat palatable.......2003-06-20
Being a napkin enthusiast, naturally I'm quite an avid fan of Linda Hetzer, however, I find it immensely unnerving that she inexcusably has omitted several key napkin folding solutions. Apparently, she just wouldn't make the effort to list 100 Fancy Folds, just only 94 - how revolting.

Customer Reviews:
Great for beginners .......2007-06-04
I bought this book many years ago and I still use it today.
(I'm the kind of learner that needs a how-to book on napkin folding.I can't just look at a napkin and do it)
So,if you need a book with great step-by-step instructions on napkin folding, then this book is the book for you.
PS: Plz note that this book was written in the 1980's. The photos are mostly in black and white.
Good, Simple Instructions.......2000-12-17
I had no problem using this to fold napkins for Thanksgiving. I did the cardinal's hat (on the cover) and the one that makes a pocket for slipping the silverware into. They came out great and added a lot to the table setting. Small book, maybe 25 different folds -- more than enough for me.
pas cher et très bien expliqué!.......2000-04-26
Ce livre est très bien fait. Il a 22 figures. J'ai beaucoup aimé: rabbit, swan, boat with sails, laddy's slipper.

Customer Reviews:
Fun to read........1999-01-28
This is a fun book to read if you like symbolism, and even if you don't, it's fun to read the poems in the back. In this, almost every flower, clover and herb has a meaning and just about any flower you can you'll find in here. The illustrations are sweet, and this is a great reference if you're looking for something sentimental to give a friend.
Book Description
With easy-to-follow instructions and step-by-step illustrations, Napkin Folding shows you how to create ingenious napkin fold for every tabletop occasion. Forty-four unique designs include:
• The Lily — elegant when fanned out in a stemmed glass.
• The French Fold — insert a place card or menu between the folds.
• The Palm Leaf — perfect for showing off your napkin–ring collection.
• The Gondola — ideal for serving breakfast or fruit.
James Ginders, who has a repertoire of more than 180 folds, rates each one by degree of difficulty, ranging from elementary to advanced, and also indicates which folds can be done with paper napkins as well as linen.
This handy practical guide will help you add that special finishing touch to your entertaining table.
Customer Reviews:
NOT for Amateurs.......2004-12-25
This book is NOT for amateurs, but those who are striving to be the masters in any aspect of the restaurant, culinary, and food service business. Accordingly,
THINGS I LIKE ...
1. This is absolutely one of the cheapest reference books around that you'll ever find. It's a true bargain.
2. The black & white photos are excellent. They are really "presentation" at its finest.
3. The esoteric names for all the various folds are handy and valuable to know, connoting a real dedication to excellence in this field.
4. The one-page drawings are ok, but not for the "abstract-challenged." Better students of math will do better with them. Again, not for amateurs.
WHAT I DON'T LIKE ....
1. Color pictures would be nice.
2. Yes, only two pages per fold design is a limitation in getting it across.
3. Longer explanations would help even amateurs to grasp the steps. But then, that's the competition, right?!
Highly affordable, and thus recommended for anybody who has found this subject.
Some good-looking folds, but incomprehensible instructions........2004-03-28
I've been into napkin-folding for over 35 years, since first encountering some brief folds in the Vincent & Mary Price Cookbook, "Treasury of Great Recipes." While I find at least a couple of the folds in "Napkin Folding" compelling (not a very good percentage), they also seem to be the ones with the least comprehensible instructions. Ginders is fine when he's writing conventional text, but it seems like he's bent over backwards to make his explanations brief...to the point of uselessness.
Other books offer more ideas.......2003-03-27
Hmmm. Other, similar books offer up to 94 easy folds, so this may leave you feeling short-changed. Only buy if you know you're unlikely to need more than 50 types of fold.
Better books exist on the subject.......2001-01-13
As a chief steward on private yachts, I'm always on the lookout for good books on napkin folding. Unfortunately, this isn't really one of them. There are some good folds but, the instructions are difficult to decipher. Of the 44 different folds offered, I've used about two.
Poor instructions unless you like solving puzzles........1998-01-18
Nice black and white and a few color photos. Our family found the instructions nearly incomprehensible and frustrating. Many interesting designs if you can puzzle them out. Suffers in comparison to "Folding Napkins" by Gay Merrill Gross (1993, paperback).
Book Description
This book offers a diverse collection of 35 easy-to-do napkin designs, from classic favorites such as the Swan, to new creations such as Fanci Frills or the Happi Coat. Many of the designs will serve double duty: the Lazy Susan contains little compartments for serving nuts and snacks and the Roll Wrap keeps bread rolls warm from the oven. Following the carefully crafted step-by-step instructions, readers will discover how easily and effortlessly they can make memorable table decorations. Included with the book is a practice napkin made from fine Indian cotton that has instructions printed on it.

Enhance Your Table With These Creations.......2004-12-08
The color photographs are nice and the steps are easy to follow. This even comes with a napkin to practice with. Another book you may want to sample is Olga's Frumpy Folds by Olga Schpitfeir.

Napkins with a Twist: Fabulous Folds with Flair for Every Occasion
ASIN: 1402700717 |
Book Description
Classic, elegant, and even whimsical folded napkins can be so striking that you don't need a centerpiece! Some, like the Swan, are purely decorative. Others, arranged in basket or box shapes, hold food or small gifts nestled among the folds. Still more are practical: the Silverware Cover is suited for dining al fresco, because the weighted napkin won't blow away. Coordinate meals with napkin designs: for example, a Geisha Fan could accompany Japanese cuisine. Arrange lotus blossoms, water lilies, even a special "Bridal Train" for a wedding banquet!
